TAX BENEFIT

The UK Government introduced a tax break in the 1999 Finance Act that allowed employers to loan bikes to their staff as a tax-free benefit. To capitalise on this initiative, Salary Sacrifice schemes can be agreed, allowing employees to benefit from having a bike at a vastly reduced price. The employer purchases the bike for their employee, saving on Tax, National Insurance and VAT.

The bike is loaned to the employee, who pays off this reduced cost (over a period of time if necessary) directly from their salary and without that
portion of their wage packet being impacted by Income Tax or National Insurance. In effect the user will have bought a bike at approximately half the normal purchase price.

Here’s how it can work:
We invoice the employer at £399 (+VAT which the company reclaims). £353.72 is deducted (prior to Tax or NI) by the company from the employee’s wages with their agreement. The bike is provided. benefit free, to the employee. The company saves 12.8% NI on the £353.72 deducted, so that the cost to the company of providing the bike is Zero and it only costs the employee what they would have taken home on the £353.72 gross pay, which is approximately £236.99 for a basic rate tax payer and £173.32 for a higher rate tax payer.

To make even better use of your bike, employers can pay 20p a mile to employees who use their bikes at work (not to and from home), tax free, with no limit. So if you do from as little as 17 miles a week at work you can completely pay for your bike in 1 year.
